Politicians are no strangers to running their mouths on social media gaining either flak or praise for their comments.

However, the one taking the crown this week for agitating Twitterjaya is former Law Minister Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim.

In a series of tweets yesterday, Mohd Zaid noted that the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, should consider setting former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak free.

Najib, who is serving 12 years in jail for misappropriating RM42mil in SRC International funds, is currently being held at Kajang prison.

Dear PM, you have to change your mind about Najib — for the sake of the people. Let him free.

He added that in order for the Madani government to win, Najib will make a great asset in the upcoming election.

This coming election; Madani needs to win; you need to be PM for a few more years. Umno is weak; only Najib will help you win.

After his tweets yesterday earned him the wrath of Malaysians on Twitter, he further ruffled feathers this morning by posting that he never said Najib stole RM42 million, but that the former Pekan MP was “found guilty for the 42 million”.

I never said Najib stole the 42 million; I said he was found guilty for the 42 million.

He opined that if there was a need for a public debate on the matter, Anwar should consider getting Media Prima or Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil to organise it, suggesting that it be moderated by someone fair like veteran journalist Tan Sri Johan Jaafar.

He also warned that if this was not done, the Green Wave, indicating Islamic opposition party PAS, will overwhelm the Madani government and added that they would only have a fighting chance with the help from the “resident of Kajang”.

And I say this again ; the Green Wave will overwhelm you ; you can only have a fighting chance with the help of the resident from Kajang.

Netizens were not happy with Mohd Zaid’s tweets.

Twitter user @anasmm replied to Mohd Zaid saying when a country is already “sick”, we should avoid trying to “medicate” it with something destructive.

Negara ini sedang sakit, jangan berubat dengan benda yang kita tahu merosakkan.

Another Twitter user @eddydaud believed that the government led by Anwar will collapse once Najib is pardoned.

He also predict that Anwar’s tenure as prime minister will be shorter than that of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

If you love the Madani Gomen pray that Najib stays in jail.

Twitter user @__earth asserted that Najib is responsible for weakening and damaging Umno and believed that Najib’s popularity within the party does not translate to national support.

Najib maybe in popular in the party, but nationally, there’s a reason Umno can’t win anymore

Twitter user @joanastephen_ also argued against the idea of pardoning Najib who has been accused of embezzling millions from the public.

She claimed that releasing someone guilty of corruption just for political gains would perpetuate the notion that Malaysia considers bribery and corruption to be trivial matters.

If a person is found guilty, whether in the past or present, they should face punishment. We shouldn’t turn a blind eye to corruption just because of political games.
